Human Design: Wearable Computers for Human Networking

چکیده

Computer technology has mostly focused either on the isolated individual, or has treated the person as a clueless extra wandering in a computer-controlled environment. Researchers seem to have forgotten that people are social animals, and that the quality of their lives is defined by their roles in human organizations. Instead of inventing technology for the individual as an isolated entity, why not invent systems that support people’s organizational roles? Or even invent new types of organizations? My colleagues and I are inventing technology that can potentially produce organizations that are more creative and efficient, and that better support the individual. Using wearable computers that actively analyze face-to-face interactions within the workplace we can extract conversational features, identify participants, define context, and determine content. By aggregating this information, high-potential collaborations and expertise within the organization can be identified, information movement and decisionmaking can be augmented, and social networks reinforced. Examples using this technology to initiate productive connections are shown, and privacy concerns are addressed. Biography Prof. Alex (Sandy) Pentland is a pioneer in wearable computers, health systems, smart environments, and technology for developing countries. He is one of the most-cited computer scientists in the world. He is the founding director of Media Lab Asia, and is a cofounder of the Center for Future Health, the Wearable Computing research community, and the international Digital Nations Consortium. He was formerly the Academic Head of the MIT Media Laboratory, and is the Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences. He has won numerous international awards in the Arts, Sciences and Engineering. He was chosen by Newsweek as one of the 100 Americans most likely to shape the next century. He currently directs the Human Design research group at the MIT Media Lab. Design and development of ShrewdShoe, a smart pressure sensitive wearable platform

This study introduces a wearable in-shoe system for real-time monitoring and measurement of the plantar pressure distribution of the foot using eleven sensing elements. The sensing elements utilized in ShrewdShoe have been designed in an innovative way, they are based on a barometric pressure sensor covered with a silicon coating. The presented sensing element has great linearity up to 300...

Pointing Devices for Wearable Computers

We present a survey of pointing devices for wearable computers, which are body-mounted devices that users can access at any time. Since traditional pointing devices (i.e., mouse, touchpad, and trackpoint) were designed to be used on a steady and flat surface they are inappropriate for wearable computers. Just as the advent of laptops resulted in the development of the touchpad and trackpoint, t...

Human computer interfaces for wearable computers: a systematic approach to development and evaluation

Over the last decades desktop computers for professional and consumer applications have become a quasi standard, both in owning them and being able to use them for various applications. Recent years are, however, dominated by a new trend in computing: The mobile use of computers. The research presented in this thesis examines user interfaces for wearable computers. Wearable computers are a spec...

Wearability Assessment of a Mobile Augmented Reality System

Wearable computers place loads on the human body. Previous studies on load carriage have found that wearing backpacks and head mounted loads can result in physiological, biomechanical and comfort effects. This paper establishes a methodology for assessing these effects in a series of tests for determining the wearability of a prototype mobile augmented reality system. The outcome of the results...

Wearable Computers: A Human Factors Review

In this article, wearable computers are considered from the perspective of human factors. Three approaches to the development of this technology are presented: computers that can be worn, information appliances that can be worn, and computers as clothing. The implications for how people will wear and interact with computers in these forms are considered. In particular, in this article a discuss...
